GAZA - TWO YEARS AFTER - Report - pdf - Two years have passed since the 26 August 2014 ceasefire which ended the most devastating round of hostilities in Gaza since the beginning of the Israeli occupation in 1967. During those 51 days, at least 2,220 people were killed, of which 1,460 are believed to be civilians, including 11 United Nations (UN) personnel. Another 11,231 people were injured, of whom 899 people were permanently disabled. Children accounted for more than a quarter of all deaths and a third of those injured. Half a million people - 28% of Gaza’s population - were displaced due to the fighting, and even as hostilities subsided, over 18,000 families - 100,000 people - were unable to return as their homes had been heavily damaged or completely destroyed. UN responds to Israel closing case into airstrike near UNRWA school during 2014 Gaza war -  The United Nations Friday responded in a statement to Israel’s announcement Wednesday that the military had exonerated itself from any wrongdoing in a missile attack near an UNRWA-run school in Rafah during the 2014 Gaza war, which killed 15 people, highlighting that the case raises “serious questions” about Israeli military conduct in relation to international law.

According to the statement released by UNRWA spokesman Chris Gunness, on August 3, 2014 during a devastating 51-day military offensive on the besieged Gaza Strip, Israeli forces launched a missile at a road outside of an UNRWA school, which was designated as an emergency shelter for displaced Palestinians on July 18 and was at the time sheltering at least 2,900 Palestinians.

The strike resulted in the killings of 15 civilians, while at least another 30 were injured.

According to the statement, UN officials warned the Israeli military on 33 separate instances that the school was being used to shelter Palestinians who had been displaced by Israeli airstrikes, adding that UN officials had warned Israeli authorities again just one hour before the devastating attack.

“This raises serious questions about the conduct of military operations in relation to obligations under international humanitarian law and respect for the inviolability and sanctity of United Nations premises under international law,” Gunness said in the statement. >>>

New Palestinian initiative outlines Fatah-Hamas reconciliation - Ahmad Melhem - Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas approved the initiative of the High Follow-Up Committee for Arab Citizens of Israel to achieve reconciliation between Fatah and Hamas during his meeting with the committee members Aug. 13 at the presidential residence in Ramallah. The committee is the highest Palestinian political committee within the Green Line, and it includes Arab municipal leaders, Arab party members of the Knesset, representatives of political parties and Arab nonparliamentary political parties. Abbas gave the committee the green light to begin its calls with the parties concerned in the reconciliation case.

Summary Print The High Follow-Up Committee for Arab citizens of Israel has proposed a new initiative to achieve reconciliation between Fatah and Hamas, which includes the formation of a unity government and the holding of parliamentary and presidential elections.

Head of the committee Mohammed Baraka said in a press statement Aug. 19, “This initiative was developed and its details were discussed with Palestinian groups concerned with the reconciliation issue, such as Patriots to End the Split and Restore National Unity and the Palestinian Center for Policy Research and Strategic Studies - Masarat, and with Palestinian figures such as Munib al-Masri and his group, Edgo, to agree on a joint course of action.” The plan was approved by Abbas during the Aug. 13 meeting.

The aforementioned parties held conferences and discussions about ways to end the division. Masarat has always welcomed influential political parties to discuss their vision about how to end the Palestinian rift. For his part, Masri and his group launched several initiatives and paid visits to the Gaza Strip for that purpose. >>>

The ‘New York Times’ is dead set on marginalizing Jewish anti-Zionism -  Philip Weiss -  The New York Times is pointedly ignoring an important news story: the rise of Jewish anti-Zionism. A battle is taking place among Jews over the dead end that Jewish nationalism represents, but the paper of record is doing all it can to pretend that battle isn’t happening, or that only lunatics are engaged, and thereby suffocate an explosive discussion.

Two days ago Haaretz ran two stunning op-eds by American Jewish historians Hasia Diner and Marjorie Feld titled, “We’re American Jewish Historians. This Is Why We’ve Left Zionism Behind,” saying that they cannot go comfortably into Jewish spaces that deny the Nakba any more. Diner, a professor at New York University, related a struggle that will resonate in the hearts of many other American Jews: >>>

Defeating Labour’s manufactured anti-Semitism crisis - Asa Winstanley - Earlier this month, the UK Labour Party came under attack in the press after its leader nominated Shami Chakrabarti, a civil liberties activist, for a seat in the House of Lords. In June, Chakrabarti published the report of her inquiry into anti-Semitism and other forms of racism in the party.

The inquiry was set up by party leader Jeremy Corbyn two months earlier, as a way of dealing with allegations of anti-Semitism that had dogged the party since Corbyn was elected as leader in September 2015. But as The Electronic Intifada’s reporting exposed at the time, the “anti-Semitism crisis” was a media fabrication. Although there were a few cases of anti-Semitic statements by Labour members made on social media – often years before Corbyn was even elected leader – the vast majority of the evidence was exaggerated or simply fabricated. One of the main aims of this campaign of defamation was to damage Corbyn in the run-up to May’s local elections.

Chakrabarti approached the inquiry with a deep, and personal, understanding of the reality of racism. Part of the UK’s Asian community, her family has experienced racist violence. She also added something that had been missing from the start of the manufactured crisis: an evaluation of the evidence. Her report concluded that “the Labour Party is not overrun by anti-Semitism” but that there  >>>

The Palestine Children’s Relief Fund is a registered non-political, non-profit, organization that was established in 1991 by concerned people in the U.S. to address the medical and humanitarian crisis facing Palestinian youths in the Middle East. It has since expanded to help suffering children from the region, based only on their medical needs. We do not discriminate based on religion, gender, nationality or sect.

“I commend The Palestine Children’s Relief Fund (The PCRF) for over 20 years of dedication to healing the wounds of war, occupation and poverty for children in the Middle East by providing urgent medical and humanitarian care to thousands of children “ President Jimmy Carter >>>

After Israeli military clears soldiers of killing families in Gaza, Palestinians call on Hague to investigate - Allison Deger - Israel’s military cleared soldiers of criminal wrongdoing in alleged human rights violations committed during the 2014 summer war in Gaza, according to an army report published yesterday [PDF]. Investigations closed inquests into 13 incidents including the killing of three Palestinian families and other civilians, and the shelling of a medical clinic, Gaza’s main power plant, and a United Nations shelter, among other offenses.

“We did not expect anything less than Israel’s justification of war crimes,” chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat said after the publication of the military report, and urged the International Criminal Court to investigate the offenses.

In some of the cases of death and injury, the Israeli Defense Forces Military Advocate General (IDF MAG) admitted soldiers were negligent, but ruled their actions did not violate the rules of war.

A further seven criminal cases were opened for “exceptional incidents” where soldiers operating in Gaza are “accused of looting and of aiding and abetting looting.”

“The legal proceedings regarding these charges are underway at the present time,” said the report. >>>

‘Why do you have Arabic in this notebook?’: 17-year-old American student strip searched and interrogated in Ben Gurion airport - Hanna - I am a 17-year-old American girl. I grew up in a small town in Massachusetts. My mother is from the U.S. and my father is a U.S. citizen born in Morocco. In the summer of 2016, I went through Ben Gurion Airport. Going into the country I had no issues. Leaving, however, was a different story.

Getting through the initial security check was relatively quick, but the number they put on the back of my passport was a 5 out of 6. The man at security told me I had to bring my bag to oversized luggage, so I made my way there and tried to give the man my bag. The man at oversized luggage asked to see my passport, checked the number on the back, then made me put my bag on a special table. He told me I was all set to go.

I then went to the security check on the way to the terminal. The officer there told me to go through the shortest line, which I later found out was extra security. When it was my turn to get checked, I was sent to the end of a long metal table and was told to dump out all my belongings so another security officer could check them.

After only about 10 minutes of checking and questioning me, the officer said I could pack all my stuff and I was ready to go. He picked up my notebook to hand it to me and it happened to open to the one page of writing in the whole book, a childhood Arabic lesson, which was dated 2012 at the top. He told me he would be back and came back with another man who grabbed the notebook, stared at it, then stared at me. He started by asking, “Why do you have Arabic in this notebook?” then asked, “What connection do you have to >>>
