Palestinians inside Israel are under attack - Jonathan Cook - Was it meant as an epic parody or an insult to his audience’s intelligence? It was hard to tell.

Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu took to social media to apologise for last year’s notorious election-day comment, when he warned that “the Arabs are coming out to vote in droves” – a reference to the fifth of Israel’s population who are Palestinian.

In videos released last week in English and Hebrew, Mr Netanyahu urged Palestinian citizens to become more active in public life. They needed to “work in droves, study in droves, thrive in droves,” he said. “I am proud of the role Arabs play in Israel’s success”.

Pointedly, Ayman Odeh, head of the Palestinian-dominated Joint List party, noted that 100,000 Bedouin citizens could not watch the video because Israel denies their communities electricity, internet connections and all other services.

Swiftly and predictably, the reality of life for Israel’s 1.7 million Palestinians upstaged Mr Netanyahu’s fine words. In a radio interview, Moti Dotan, the head of the Lower Galilee regional council, sent a message to his Palestinian neighbours: “I don’t want them at my [swimming] pools.” Sounding like a mayor in the southern United States during the Jim Crow-era, he added: “Their culture of cleanliness isn’t the same as ours. Why is that racist?” Dotan was no extremist, observed the liberal newspaper Haaretz. He >>>

Palestinian citizens of Israel have never known what it means to be welcome citizens in the country of their birth. - Sawsan Khalife' - In a much-discussed video message to Palestinian citizens of Israel last week, Prime Minister Netanyahu lauded the achievements of Arabs in the arts, business, politics and the legal world. “Israel is strong because of our diversity and pluralism — not in spite of it,” he said, describing a plan to close social gaps in Arab society as aiming “to reach ever higher in the noble pursuit of equality and dignity for all.”

For Palestinian citizens of Israel, however, the speech sounded like nothing more than spin — a liberal democratic wrapper on an illiberal reality of discrimination and selective democracy. On the face of things, Israel does indeed resemble a democracy. But if you scratch a little deeper, there is an uglier layer behind the façade.

For instance, a week before Netanyahu praised the basic fact that there are Arab members of Israel’s parliament, the Knesset, he pushed through a law (which passed last week) that allows Jewish parliamentarians to reject and eject elected Palestinian representatives not to the majority’s liking.

While Netanyahu outlined a vision in which Arab children “grow up knowing they can achieve anything in Israel as valued and equal citizens in our democracy,” he and his government reject the very notion of Israel being “a state of all its citizens.” Palestinian children, instead of being welcome citizens, are a “demographic threat.” >>>

Fate of Hebron Hills village likely to be decided by Israeli defense minister -  In the latest development in a decades-long legal battle by Palestinian residents of the village of Susiya in the southern Hebron Hills to remain in their ancestral lands, an Israeli supreme court hearing confirmed on Monday that a decision regarding the fate of the threatened village could likely be decided by ultraright Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman.

The hearing was set to decide whether to accept the state of Israel’s request to immediately and without prior notice demolish 40 percent of the occupied West Bank village where some 100 people live, according to Israeli NGO Rabbis for Human Rights (RHR).

Two weeks ago, Israeli authorities abruptly halted months of dialog with Susiya’s residents, who had appealed to the court with a master plan with the support of RHR, over the possibility of legalizing the village.

Any future agreement on the legality of the village would now be the responsibility of the defense minister, Israeli authorities told the residents.

The Israeli Supreme Court’s hearing determined that Lieberman would make his position public in two week’s time.

During the hearing, Israel Supreme Court President Miriam Naor expressed frustration over the Israeli government's lack of clarity regarding its position int he case, as well as the position of Susiya’s residents and their lawyers presenting the appeal. >>>

Israel deliberately forces inhuman conditions on Palestinians working in the country by permit - B`Tselem - “This reality, in which workers have to sacrifice a normal family life, a social life, and a reasonable amount of sleep for endless hours of waiting for a checkpoint to open, only so they can get to work on time, is not a necessary evil but a result of Defense Ministry policy. […] This reality cannot be excused on security grounds or by citing budgetary concerns or personnel issues. It reflects a deliberate choice by the Israeli authorities to maintain these inhuman conditions and force them on Palestinian workers” >>>

As Israel Prospers, Obama Set to Give Billions More in Aid While Netanyahu Demands Even More - Glenn Greenwald - "Usually, when someone hands you billions of dollars in aid, you’re not in much of a position to demand more. But the rules for Israel when it comes to U.S. policy, as is so often the case, are simply different. Even as Israel has aggressively expanded settlements of the West Bank (often in a way designed to most humiliate the U.S.) and slaughtered civilians in Gaza, U.S. aid simply increases more and more" >>>

A year since the Duma murders: Navigating justice and pain -  Samah Salaime - A year after loosing his parents and baby brother, six-year-old Ahmad Dawabshe returns to Duma for the first time. At court hearings for their accused murderers, settler youths taunt the remaining family members. A journey through an unimaginably painful year.

“I know you spent a lot of time with the Dawabshe family in the hospital,” said the activist who called me last week. “I need your help.” It’s been a long time since I visited them, I told her. Sunday marks one year since the tragic arson attack, and the images started flashing through my head: how I found myself heading to the ICU that cursed Friday alongside what remained of the Dawabshe family. >>>

Who is Meir Ettinger, the Shin Bet’s No.1 alleged Jewish nationalist? - Meir Kahane’s grandson is being held in the wake of a rash of extremist attacks, including the fatal firebombing of a Palestinian home; his lawyer says he’s never been involved in violence - Simona Weinglass - 6. 8. 2015 - Following worldwide horror and condemnation over the firebombing murder last Friday of 18-month-old Ali Saad Dawabsha in the Palestinian village of Duma, Israel’s Shin Bet arrested its first suspect on Monday – Meir Ettinger, the 23-year-old grandson of assassinated extremist rabbi Meir Kahane.

Ettinger is considered a radical member and leader of Israel’s “hilltop youth,” young people from religiously observant families who move to settlement outposts, resist soldiers’ attempts to evacuate them, and intermittently carry out “price tag” hate crime attacks on Palestinian, Christian and Israeli targets. >>>

A year after Duma fire bombing, Dawabsha family vows to persevere  - Exactly a year ago this Sunday, suspected Jewish terrorists firebombed the Dawabsha family’s modest one-story home in the middle of the night. “Catch him, catch him, catch him,” yells six-year-old Ahmad Dawabsha, running after a bee with his cousins in his hometown Duma, a Palestinian village southeast of Nablus. >>>

Settlement Products Wikia - What is Wiki Settlement Products? - Wiki Settlement Products is a project by the Gush Shalom Movement (Israeli Peace Bloc). Its goal is to organize and make available to the public, in the most systematic and up to date manner possible, information about the factories and businesses that operate in settlements beyond the Green Line (pre-1967 border) and the products that they produce.

In 1996-97, not long after the establishment of Gush Shalom, we publicized information about settlement products, based on data gathered by our activists. In the intervening years that information, for which we did not claim any copyright, was widely disseminated – not only in the print and online versions that we publicized ourselves, but also by many other individuals and organizations. The information was copied and disseminated by various groups in the broad Israeli peace movement and abroad, and it was even read from the Knesset podium by Knesset Member Tamar Zandberg of Meretz.

Moreover – on several occasions the settlers themselves, and their allies, when calling upon their supporters to use settlement products, also used the information that was publicized by Gush Shalom - verbatim, including several typos…
